Summer Party 2012

Tuesday July 10th, 6.30pm, Speed Lawn

Your committee is hoping that, by mid-July, it may be warm enough to venture on to Speed House Lawn without coat, scarf and gloves.

In 2012, we have more reasons than usual for a party – but the one we really celebrate each year is the unique joy of living here at the Barbican, and particularly in the Barbican’s unique block, Willoughby House.

For anyone new to Willoughby House, our annual summer party provides the perfect opportunity to meet many of your neighbours, and put names to some the faces you only see fleetingly in lifts, lobbies and stairs.

As always, the party will take place on Speed House Lawn from 6.30pm onwards, and all residents are warmly invited to come. Finger food, wine and soft drinks are provided: there is a £6 charge per adult which is payable on the night. No need to book! Just turn up on the night.

Open meeting on 24 November

Wood Street Bar

Next Meeting on Wednesday 24 November, 7.30 pm
Wood Street Bar & Restaurant, Downstairs Bar

Our next meeting is open to all residents of Willoughby House. There is currently an unprecedented level of activity around our homes, several of which will have a major impact on us. Our agenda on the 24th will cover the following, all of which are current:

  • Milton Court and plan for temporary site offices for O3 level car park
  • St Alphage Redevelopment – planning application now active
  • Former Post Office/Telephone exchange demolition
  • Moor Lane Street Scene Improvements plan
  • Crossrail

Of particular interest to many residents will be the news that the City has now received the planning application for the St Alphage House redevelopment. When notices appear in the next few days, we will all have just 21 days in which to raise comments or make objections. We will also be discussing Milton Court construction and noise issues, which is affecting many residents towards the northern end of the block.

We hope to see you there.

The weather was kind this year, and a goodly crowd attended the party. Thanks to Susan Hosking and Chris Parkin for the pictures.

Summer Party, July 14th

summer-party

The Willoughby House summer party will now be taking place on Tuesday 14 July, which is also Bastille Day. We have moved it from the 15th, as that is also the afternoon of celebrations planned by the Barbican Estate Office for 40 Years of The Barbican.

Our party will be, as it always is, on Speed House Lawn by the Cascade. We will be serving wine and soft drinks, and there will be the usual tempting buffet of savoury and sweet things. If you wish to come, there is no need to RSVP: we will collect £6 per head from you at the event. Children under 16 are free. All residents from Willoughby House are welcome and you are also welcome to bring guests. We also extend an invitation to our neighbours in Speed House, Andrewes House and Brandon Mews.

Barbi-topia

Barbican Cinema, Monday 29 June, 8.30pm

The Barbican Centre is repeating its showing of this series of four short films about the early years of the Barbican Estates. This programme is an unmissable chance to see films that tell the story of the Barbican from drawing boards full of post-war visions for a new tomorrow, to an arts centre and estate in full operation. Highlights include footage of the acres of rubble from which the Barbican rose after the war in Barbican Regained, a 1969 BAFTA-nominated short film on the building of the complex and a hilarious behind-the-scenes peak at the reality of Barbican life in the 80s.

With an introduction from author and Barbican expert David Heathcote this promises to be a hugely enjoyable event, the quirky and often very funny films giving historic insight into the genesis of the Barbican.

Due to the popularity of our previous Barbi-topia screening, we recommend early booking as tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
